Bob the Battling Truck

On 21st September 2002 we went to the Wirral to collect our new vehicle - an ex-military 101FC Land Rover.  William decided to describe it as a "battling truck" and sadly one of Steve's favourite sci-fi authors, Robert (Bob) Forward died the same day, hence this particluar 101Forward Control has been named "Bob".

Bob came off the production line in July 1975 and was duly delivered to the Army (V.D. Hilton) and given the military registration 62 FL19.  According his vehicle record card Bob saw service with 47 Rt Regiment Royal Artillery, "The Hampshire & Sussex Gunners" (I think as they have been re-organised since then) and 100 Field Regiment (V) - which is a Royal Artillery TA regiment with three batteries. Bob was demobbed in 1997 and was given the civilian registration of KTU957N.

Bob from the side Driving Bob up our residential street with cars parked on both sides is "fun" and it isjust amazing the way people give way to an oncoming 101.

Bob from the frontBob's cab holds two people and we have now added three minibus seats in the back, though the boys would still prefer to ride sat on the engine cover, especailly as that way their school friends can see them.

For scale Steve (on the right) is 5'8" tall.  Bob has generated lots of interest from the neighbours, who mostly ask Lizzy "What did you let him get that for?"  To which the reply is "It's my little run around for going shopping with ......"

The insurance is much cheaper than for any of our other even if the fuel consumption is rather higher, however with an LPG conversion it isn't quite so painful for the wallet.

Bob's first adventure with  us was when he was fitted out as a full, if small in size, mobile workshop for a site service visit in Belgium.  He had a lathe, pillar drill, bench grinder, vice and brewing up facilities.  In fact, just about everything except the kitchen sink.

For Easter 2003 we went to visit Lizzy's parents in Pembrokeshire and after pulling a couple of late nighters had a nice welded frame with three minibus seats bolted to it so that the children could be transported in a rather more secure manner than a gun crew!  While we were down there we took Bob off road at K Quads near Carmarthen (contact details) where we managed to get Bob totally bogged down, but both had lots of fun playing in the mud and generally bumping about.

Bogged down!
How deep?

1st June 2003 saw us taking Bob off road seriously for the first time at the "Unofficial" Northern 101 Meet, ably organised by Graeme and Fresca.

The current project is fitting a Detroit locker inside the rear differential.  Pics to follow.

Well the Detroit Locker is now fitted and we tested it at Cowm Top Quarry, Whitworth in Feb 2004
