Tie-Dyeing

While I was a Brownie leader one the most anticipated activities was the summer evening when the girls got to tie-dye a T-shirt each.  I would put my shirts in later on after they had done theirs, but because of the way the dyeing process works mine were always rather pastel.

For celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubilee we have made red, white and blue garments.  We used Dylon Cold Dyes in Mexican Red & French Navy and twisted the shirts to make a spiral (for instructions see Links section), divided the resulting disk into 4 or 6 sectors and then liberally applied dye from both sides to the sectors in alternating colours (or in Emma's case dipped the disk into blue, then red dye turning it a 1/4 turn between dipping to give sectors in blue, purple, red & white).  The dyed disks were left in plastic bags overnight and then rinsed and washed to give the following results.
